University of Leeds opens textile archives to design communityFebruary 23, 2005A unique database of historical fabric designs, some dating back more than 100 years, is to be launched at creative textile design exhibition Indigo in Paris. Called ULITA DESIGN ARCHIVE, the web based database has been developed as a design and trend resource for designers and forecasters in the textile, apparel and fashion retail sectors. The designs originate from the University of Leeds' International Textiles Archive www.leeds.ac.uk/ulita and are being made available to designers for the first time ever. The archive holds textile designs from all over the world and has been collected over the 19th and 20th centuries. ULITA will initially offer two seasonal collections per year, with each collection providing a major source of inspiration for textile and fashion designers. The archive includes an enormous range of fabrics and design types, from woven Jacquards through to printed silks and cottons.
For an annual fee, subscribers can access the database, allowing them to search different categories of designs. Subscribers can commercialise the designs in the database for an additional fee, and their chosen design will be removed from the website in order to retain its exclusivity. "We've had a number of designers take a look at the archives and they've all been very enthusiastic about us making them available for use during the design process," says Tony Smith, who is behind the ULITA concept. "We're offering them the exclusive right to use historical designs in their collections, which is something that is very appealing to the design community." ULITA launches its website - www.ulitadesign.com at Indigo (March 9-12), with its first collection of designs for the Autumn/Winter 2006/07 season. campuspr | |||||||||||||||||||||
