President Putin of Russia always travels with a black van packed with the latest hi-tech medical gear, with low roof for easy air transport. This is his private ambulance, built in Iisalmi, Finland, by Profile, which claims to be the biggest exporter of ambulances in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. As the Rolls Royce of the ambulance world it supplies customers from Scotland to China and Taiwan.

Profile says its ambulances, luxury minibuses, police vans and armoured cash carriers are special for the incredible detail that goes into the design, workmanship and placement of every part. The company converts Mercedes, VW, Ford and Chevrolet van bodies sent by clients. It works closely with these manufacturers as well as clients who may demand a host of special features. It keeps up with the latest in pre-hospital care, regulations, emergency vehicle standards, lights, electrics, etc. and advises customers on the best options.

Some may want a new system that allows doctors to communicate with the ambulance from their offices. If the vehicle carries GPS, Profile has to know the satellite systems it uses. A Chinese ambulance may have a bench for relatives to accompany a patient; a Norwegian one will have shelves for rescuers' rucksacks.

Ambulances can be dangerous, so sharp corners must be eliminated and proper fixings provided for equipment and crew. Everything must be easy to clean.

Engines and chassis can wear out after just three years but cabins may last ten, hence Profile's new "modular concept." This is a cabin that can be unhitched and bolted onto a new chassis when the old one fails. Its higher cost is offset by major savings over 10 years says Profile. It is ideal for emergencies, being highly advanced and 30 percent bigger than a normal ambulance, allowing more room for medics to work. Its Intelligent Wiring System also guarantees power to vital equipment.
