The Cult Of MediocrityJanuary 11, 2005In the opening editorial of the January 2005 issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, the Editor, Giovanni A. Fava, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Bologna, comments on the increasing popularity of mediocrity, which has reached the dimension of a cult. In Europe, the special interest groups which control the academic life are threatened by talented and independent researchers, who would unmask their inadequacies. In North America, mediocrity does not interfere with industry-driven plans in what has been defined as a "business adopting the appearance of a science". Why is talent so threatening? Because it is associated with independent thinking, which undermines the power structure, whereas mediocrity assures lifelong commitment. Fighting the cult of mediocrity in science is very difficult, since we are surrounded by increasing levels of mediocrity on TV, newspapers, magazines and movies. But it is the task of any independent journal. Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, Journal of |
