Working with care to stop bullyingJanuary 07, 2005Bullying and harassment at work are encountered by a significant proportion of healthcare staff. A new tool, developed by occupational psychologists and sponsored by the Royal College of Nursing, has been designed as one part of an organisational strategy to tackle the problem which damages individuals and organisational efficiency alike. Dr Diane Beale of the University of Loughborough will present her work to create a tool to prevent bullying in the workplace to the British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology Annual Conference today, Thursday 13 January 2005. The conference, sponsored by Pearn Kandola, is being held at the Chesford Grange Hotel, just outside the town of Warwick. Dr Beale's research has led to the creation of a pro-active tool to prevent bullying, called "Working with care", developed in collaboration with the Royal College of Nursing. The tool consists of questionnaires and guided group sessions which help individuals and the teams they work in improve their behaviour, to consider their behaviour and create a more positive working environment.
At an individual level the "Working with care" tool encourages staff to think about the effects of their interactions with colleagues. It covers positive behaviour such as courtesy and showing appreciation as well as negative behaviours like belittling work or making derogatory remarks, and "retrieval" behaviours such as apologising At a team level, group activities bring individuals together to use positive behaviours identified at the individual level and applies them to the team as a whole. The group then considers scenarios that commonly cause conflict or discontent and discusses how the team would manage them. Finally the group produces a team action plan. Dr Beale said: "Whilst this isn't designed as a tool to use where major problems already exist, we do think it can help create a supportive working culture where bullying and harassment are less likely to occur".
