Planning for the future - building on the past
January 07, 2005Occupational psychologists working with the Metropolitan Police are pioneering new debriefing sessions after major incidents or cases to gather the experience gained and ensure it is made available to inform planning for similar events in the future.
The work on operational debriefing, carried out by Alexandra Walsh of the Metropolitan Police Internal Consultancy Service, is to be presented today, Thursday 13 January 2005, at the British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology Annual Conference. The conference, sponsored by Pearn Kandola, is being held at the Chesford Grange Hotel, just outside the town of Warwick.
The debrief, facilitated by occupational psychologists, brings together representatives from all parties involved in an incident or case. From the Police this may mean detectives, forensic specialists and surveillance officers, from external bodies it may mean representatives of the local authority or criminal justice partners.
Together they are encouraged to record their thoughts on the events in which they were involved, which are then assimilated by the psychologists into a report providing a summary of all their comments and recommendations for future practice.
Alexandra Walsh said: "In order for an organization to learn from events it is important to create an open and honest exchange of views in the debrief. Operational debriefing does this, and can be used within any organization in order to share good practice, enhance learning, and ultimately drive performance improvements."
Operational debriefing on child deaths has already led to a review of the Metropolitan Police Service's organisational structures for responding to sudden infant death, and lessons learnt by its Family Liaison Officers who went to the US after the attacks of 11 September 2001 have led to new criteria for the selection and deployment of Family Liaison Officers.
