Iceland becomes EMBL's 18th Member State
December 07, 2004Iceland has officially joined the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) to become the organization's 18th Member State. The EMBL council accepted Iceland's application for membership during a council meeting last month in Heidelberg. The new membership will begin on January 1, 2005.
The Icelandic Minister of Education and Science Ms Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir expressed her enthusiasm about the decision. "Since the mid 1980s Iceland has invested quite considerably in biotechnology and become particularly prominent in the field of human genomics. Iceland hopes to contribute to EMBL activities and derive the many benefits from participating in such a distinguished organization. It is of great importance for the future of science in a small nation such as Iceland to be a part of a world-class center of excellence such as the EMBL." The Icelandic delegate will be Dr. Eirikur Steingrimsson, a distinguished professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Iceland.
The EMBL also continually welcomes visitors to participate in collaborative projects and cutting-edge meetings, and works to establish partnerships with national institutions. Because of its unique turnover system (a system without permanent appointments), EMBL is serving a crucial role in recruiting top young scientists and keeping them in Europe. Of more than 2000 EMBL alumni that have been traced, over 80% have assumed positions in academia or industry, mostly in their home countries and often as professors or heads of departments, companies or institutes.
"We are extremely pleased to accept Iceland into the EMBL," noted Prof. Fotis C. Kafatos, EMBL's Director-General. "Despite its small population, the country has made significant contributions in the field of molecular biology genetics. It will be an excellent addition to our organization and will complete the membership of all five Scandinavian countries."
EMBL currently has 1300 staff members throughout its sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Heidelberg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), and Monterotondo (Italy).
