New Center for Biosystems Science and Engineering in BaselNovember 15, 2004In Autumn 2005 the new Center for Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich will open its doors in Basel. In the last few months, various committees have developed a scientific concept for the Center and worked up profiles for the four first professors. The positions will be posted at the end of this month. Novartis will contribute one million Swiss francs to support the scientists appointed to the Center in Basel. The Center for Biosystems Science and Engineering in Basel is part of Project SystemsX, which is a national network for the future field of systems biology that is mutually supported by ETH Zurich and the Universities of Zurich and Basel. Intensive preparations for the Center have been underway for months. Groups of scientists from ETH Zurich and the Universities of Zurich and Basel have established the future-oriented areas of research. New interdisciplinary approach
The scientific concept for the Center aims at advancing a new understanding of complex biological systems. A holistic interdisciplinary approach and an innovative organizational form should open up new knowledge dimensions. Various scientific fields such as biology, physics, mathematics, computational science, chemistry, information technology, biotechnology and nanotechnology, etc., will work closely together to investigate the behaviour of individual cells and their interaction with other cells. The main focus is on how an entire system (of one cell or a cell bundle) behaves under specific changes, for example, as they would during an illness. The biggest challenge is to process the very large amount of data that will emerge from the increasingly precise experiments so that the results of the research on the functioning of complex biological systems can be better understood. Professors sought The positions for the first four professors for the Center of Biosystems will be announced in the scientific magazines "Science" and "Nature" will in the next few weeks. These include two specialists in the area of experimental systems biology, as well as one internationally known expert each for the areas of Computational Biology and Systems Nanobiology. The four professors are expected to start their research activities in Autumn 2005 in the new Center. Once the rental contract for suitable spaces in Basel is signed, the way is free for the opening of the Center in Autumn 2005. Novartis donates a million francs To help celebrate the 150-year anniversary of ETH Zurich in 2005, Novartis has placed a contribution of one million Swiss francs at the disposal of ETH Zurich for use on the new Center. The money is a dedicated contribution and is in-tended as start-up financing for the scientists who will be appointed to the new Center. ETH Zuerich | |||||||||||||||||||||
