Hat Trick for University of Leicester Plant Biologist

A University of Leicester scientist has recently received the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation) Young Investigator Award, the first UK plant biologist to be awarded this prestigious international prize.

Dr Simon Geir M'�ller received the award for his work on plastid division and development in plants. His research seeks to understand how the plant cell regulates the division of chloroplasts, work which holds out hope of a safer way of genetically modifying crops, with implications for agriculture.

The EMBO Young Investigator Panel seeks out 'the best and most promising young independent researchers in Europe'. The highly competitive nature of the EMBO awards is reflected in the fact that over the past five years only 23 young UK scientists have been honoured in this way.

Dr M'�ller commented: "It is particularly hard for plant scientists to get this award; prior to this round, only five plant scientists in Europe had received recognition in this way. So I was very happy when I heard the news, because this recognition is great for UK plant science and it means that EMBO recognises the importance of plant biology."

This is the third award in quick succession that Dr M'�ller has received. Earlier this year he was given the Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (FESPB) Young Scientist Award, and The Society of Experimental Biology (SEB) President's Medal in Cell Biology.
