New Manager for DiagnOx Laboratory
October 06, 2004
DiagnOx, the UK's leading membership network for diagnostics researchers, companies and support organisations, has appointed Maureen Peters as the new Manager of the DiagnOx Laboratory, a unique incubator facility designed to boost the commercialisation of UK diagnostics research. Located in Cherwell Innovation Centre, Oxfordshire, it provides offices and shared laboratory and equipment facilities where diagnostics researchers, or companies developing medical diagnostic products, can undertake prototyping and proof of concept work. Ms Peters joins the DiagnOx Laboratory after 14 years with Serotec, one of the world's leading producers of antibodies, where she was responsible for introducing and scaling up new production methods for monoclonal antibodies, as well as customer support and training. Her other experience includes R&D and production for the European Diagnostics Products Corporation and posts in research laboratories in the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, the Nuffield Department of Surgery at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, and the Department of Surgery, Leicester University.
Ms Peters said: "I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to manage the DiagnOx Laboratory, which plays a key role in helping diagnostic researchers and companies develop their ideas and innovations into new ventures. I am excited by the prospect of working with the innovative companies already using the Laboratory and welcome enquiries from people looking for help in taking their diagnostic ideas forward. We can offer them a range of services, from premises on flexible terms to help with fundraising and advice on IP protection and regulatory compliance."
Lisa Mynheer, DiagnOx Manager, said: "Maureen Peters brings substantial experience in laboratory management and techniques. She joins us at a time when the DiagnOx Laboratory is expanding in response to demand for its successful facilities. We recently secured further funding to cover operations for the next two years - a total package of over £440,000 with £337,000 from the DTI's Harnessing Genomics Programme and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), plus substantial in-kind support from Oxford Innovation and other partners. This has enabled us to plan to expand the facility to include an equipped tissue culture lab.
The DiagnOx Laboratory is home to three new companies, with others set to move in. DiaMatrix Ltd has won an R&D Grant (SMART Award) to develop a new platform technology for 'dipstick' diagnostic tests, such as pregnancy tests and illegal drug tests. The new rapid tests will simplify manufacturing, reduce costs and improve performance. The company is also developing a novel technology for biosensor fabrication. Oxford Bio-Innovation Ltd is developing new markers of diseases, and Ocuity Ltd specializes in licensing its innovative optical technology for display products, such as 2D/3D switchable cell phones, to manufacturing partners.
