Over £1m to support science in under-achieving schoolsSeptember 02, 2004The Planet Science Outreach Programme, managed by NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) for DfES (Department for Education and Skills), has brought its total support for schools with low levels of attainment in science to over £1 million with its final round of awards. Five final awards will enable a series of projects that have proved their ability to engage schools previously underperforming in science to develop strategies for them to achieve long-term sustainability. The final awards are: "¢The Natural World of Science, run by Sheffield Wildlife Trust, will receive £20,951 for its work using outdoor working to stimulate an interest in the sciences. "¢Red Hot Science is run by the Association of Science Education and the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University. It will receive £23,000 for its work on exploring and revealing science within popular culture using mechanisms that children have an active interest in, such as interactive games and films.
"¢Science by Design is run by Sport by Design Ltd in Birmingham. It aims to use the science of sport to engage teachers and pupils in science at Key Stage Three and has received an award of £29,000. "¢Enhancing Science Uptake is managed by the Institute of Education at the University of London. It will receive £25,900 for its work with Science PGCE students at the Institute, which helps challenging London schools to organise science-based activities. These activities are designed to motivate pupils and increase both their interest and attainment in the process. "¢E-Mission: Operation Montserrat, run by the National Space Centre in Leicester, will receive £26,043 for its work in producing interactive problem-solving exercise that allow pupils to use real scientific data to complete missions. Planet Science Outreach projects are targeted at Key Stages 2, 3 or 4 within maintained schools in England that have not benefited from other science education. The programme was successfully piloted through eight organisations in 2003 and, following this, six won funding to run their projects during the 2003/04 school year. Phil Jones, Learning Development Executive at NESTA, said: "The success of the Outreach programme in helping to re-energise pupils in science should not be ignored. At NESTA we actively search for imaginative new ways of communicating science that break down traditional barriers to learning, particularly through our Learning programme and by delivering Science Year on behalf of the DfES. This final round of support will give these five successful initiatives every chance of continuing, independently and for a long time."
