ESC Congress 2004: Fishy stuff or a real cure? - Contrary to popular belief, a Danish study now suggests that consumption of fish does not prevent atrial fibrillationAugust 31, 2004Danish scientists from the University Hospital in Aarhus have carried out a study that questions the effect of consuming n-3 fatty acids from fish on the prevention of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is an irregularity of the heart rhythm that - if left untreated - may lead to stroke and death. Atrial fibrillation is most often treated with anticoagulants and heart rate reducing drugs. Millions of people in the western world suffer from this disorder. The investigators followed 47 949 participants in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study. All participants were free of any known heart disease before the study started, and they completed a food questionnaire on the type and frequency of fish consumption. The study participants were followed-up through the Danish National Registry of Patients and the Danish Civil Registration System. The Danish Medical Research Council supported the study. During the 5.7-year follow-up period 374 men and 182 women were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The investigators did not find any protective effect against atrial fibrillation from the consumption of n-3 fatty acids from fish. Consequently, the investigators suggest that a large scale randomised trial with fish oil tablets or matching placebo may add conclusive information as to whether fish oil has a protective effect against the occurrence of atrial fibrillation.
