Media Invitation - The Impact of Big Physics on IndustryAugust 31, 2004Celebrating 50 years of CERN 1954 - 2004 The Impact of Big Physics on Industry Technology Opportunities from CERN Thursday 16th September,
Church House Conference Centre, London 10.30 - 17.00 CERN is the European Particle Physics Laboratory; a jewel in the crown of European Scientific discovery and technology development. Its large-scale experiments drive advancements across a range of disciplines. In celebration of CERN's 50th year you are invited to attend a showcase event that will look at the technology opportunities from CERN, past and present. Not only was the World Wide Web invented at CERN; a host of other innovations have led to advances in information technology, electronics, detector materials and instrumentation for healthcare. The challenge now is to support the uptake of a new generation of CERN innovations by UK industry and to increase the success of UK companies in selling to CERN. The keynote speech on Industry and CERN: 50 years on will be given by Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Science Minister. Other speakers/topics include:- Why CERN partners with industry Maximillian Metzger, Secretary General for CERN Big Science and Industry Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn-Smith, Director of UKAEA Culham Division and former Director General of CERN Technologies from CERN: An Overview Juan Antonio Rubio, Leader of the Education and Technology Transfer unit, CERN The event will also include the launch of a report on the DTI GlobalWatch mission to CERN in Distributed Applications. This was a three day mission to CERN which included delegates from some of the UK's leading IT, telecommunications, engineering and bioinformatics organisations. The aim of the mission was to study techniques for distributed systems over homogenous and heterogeneous computing resources. The findings of this mission will be presented in the afternoon sessions. A full programme for the event can be found at http://www.pparc.ac.uk/in/cern50.asp The event is supported by the PPARC Kite Club, CERN, the Office of Science and Technology, the DTI GlobalWatch service, the British Consulate in Geneva and UK Trade and Investment.
