RAS appoints new communications officer
August 26, 2004The Royal Astronomical Society has appointed Anita Heward to replace Dr. Jacqueline Mitton, who recently retired after 15 years as the RAS Press Officer.
Anita Heward has established herself as a science communicator and consultant after several years at the National Space Centre and, more recently, free-lancing for PPARC, The British Council and others, as well as creating and directing the 'British Festival of Space'.
Anita joins Peter Bond, who was previously designated 'RAS Press Officer (Space Science)'.
With the retirement of Dr. Mitton, the RAS Council has taken the opportunity to redefine the press officers' posts, so that they will now be known as 'Communications Officers'.
The service to the media provided by Peter Bond and Anita Heward is supported by the Royal Astronomical Society, on a part-time basis, with the aim of "promoting and encouraging astronomy and astrophysics, wherever possible by projecting the RAS as the 'voice' of its scientific community".
