What's behind bullying?August 24, 2004Why some children bully and what causes others to be bullied are questions which attract considerable attention in the fields of psychology and education. New research by developmental psychologists will show that the character profiles of bullies, those children who bully and are themselves bullied and straight-forward victims are different. The research is being presented today, Sunday 5 September 2004, by Sarah Woods of the University of Hertfordshire to The British Psychological Society's Developmental Psychology Section Annual Conference at Leeds Metropolitan University's Beckett Park Campus, Headingley, Leeds. The research shows that victims of physical bullying appear to have close friendships. However, relational victims - those bullied though the manipulation of friendships - and those who bully and are themselves victims, report having high levels of conflict with their friends. Furthermore victims of relational bullying demonstrated higher feelings of loneliness and social dissatisfaction with relationships.
It also found that bullies have high levels of sensation-seeking and take part in risk taking behaviours like gambling, risky sports and drug taking more than other children. The study was carried out with 401, 11-16 year olds in a London school using a range of established questionnaires. Sarah Woods said: "The findings of this study have important implications from both a psychological and educational perspective and we hope they will assist with the development of strategies to reduce bullying which focus on the individual needs of children."
