Is relationship health more important than sexual health for young women?August 23, 2004Young women's desire for trust in a relationship may be a contributory factor to more risky sexual practices on their part according to research by psychologists. A team from the University of Leicester will present their research today, Friday 10 September 2004, at the British Psychological Society's Division of Health Psychology Annual Conference, hosted by Queen Margaret University College and taking place at Pollock Halls in Edinburgh. Dr Sheila Bonas and colleagues from the Dept of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Leicester found, in a study of 226 women aged 18-24, that knowing about the risks of STIs, having high self-esteem and positive views of condoms meant young women were less likely to take sexual risks.
However, the need to build trust in a relationship could lead women to take sexual risks. Using condoms was felt to imply that either party in the relationship is not to be trusted. As rates of sexually transmitted infections soar researchers are trying to discover why young women take health risks which may leave them infertile or with HIV. The team from Leicester say that answers to this concern about condom use need to be included in sexual health education messages. British Psychological Society (BPS) | |||||||||||||||||||||
