University of Surrey Professor investigates environmental impacts of modern lifestylesJuly 29, 2004Professor Tim Jackson of the University of Surrey has been appointed to a new government body to investigate how today's lifestyles impact on the environment. Funded by DEFRA and the DTI, the roundtable will investigate how changing our patterns of consumption can help protect the environment both now and in the future. But it's not all about hardship and doing without, as Tim, Professor of Sustainable Development at the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey explains: 'Sustainable consumption isn't about hair-shirt eco-fascism. It's about improving our own well-being and ensuring the well-being of future generations.' The roundtable will report into the Government on a regular basis and will help drive policy in this vital area. Professor Jackson, the only academic on the committee, knows that recommendations must be practical and is aware that a fresh approach to alter consumption patterns must be adopted. 'The Roundtable is a first step in the long journey towards a better quality of life for our children and grandchildren.' This is a task for which Tim Jackson is well-qualified. He has worked for eighteen years on different aspects of sustainable consumption and production. He is currently employed at CES under a professorial research fellowship on the 'social psychology' of sustainable consumption, supported by the ESRC's Sustainable Technologies Programme. The aim of the fellowship is to undertake a critical review of different understandings of consumer behaviour and to draw out key lessons for sustainable consumption policy. Earlier this year, Tim was appointed as chair of the Economics Steering Group of the Sustainable Development Commission.
