Just A GP? The Future Of General Practice
July 22, 2004The University of Surrey was pleased to welcome guest speaker, Dr David Haslam, Chairman of Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners, to give a speech on 'The Future of General Practice' on July 20, School of Management, Guildford.
General Practice is one of the most complex of medical specialties, in which doctors have to deal with any and every medical condition. In addition, GPs cope with patients with multiple health problems and handle huge levels of uncertainty. Despite this, medical students and young doctors are frequently exposed to comments from their teachers like "You seem quite bright. Why waste yourself becoming a GP?", "General practice - it's just coughs, colds, and trivia", "Are you going to be a specialist or JUST a GP?" and so on. Many young doctors subsequently talk about "ending up as a GP" and yet no-one ever talks about "ending up as a heart surgeon". In the NHS where 90% of the work is carried out in General Practice, and the potential for increasing the amount of care that can be offered by GPs has never been greater, recruitment to general practice remains a real problem. This undervaluing of generalists by some teachers is of real concern.
The speech will also investigate the increasing importance of quality primary health care and how government guidelines and protocols impact both positively and negatively on the delivery of this care.
