CEA has summoned SAMSUNG in France for violation of its patents on Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs)July 20, 2004A pioneer in the field of flat screens, the CEA holds for more than 10 years a portfolio of patents on the LCD technology concerning the Vertically Aligned (VA) high contrast technique. This technique allows a wide angle of view and offers a higher quality of image. It is used very widely today on the international level for large-size screens on TV sets and computers. The CEA found that SAMSUNG was proposing for sale, in France, products using the VA technology according to its patents, without a licensing contract. Convinced that this technology is being counterfeited, CEA has summoned the South Korean manufacturer before the Paris Tribunal de Grande Instance. This action forms part of CEA's policy of vigilance in defending its inventions, already applied before the American courts by action taken against six manufacturers of LCD modules (SAMSUNG-Korea-, AU OPTRONICS and CHI MEI-Ta'-wan -, FUJITSU, SANYO and SHARP-Japan). The CEA thus intends to defend its inventions and valorise its research on a booming market. The CEA, a public research agency, exercises its missions in the fields of energy, information, health and defence technologies. Based on the competence of its 15 000 research scientists and assistants, the CEA is notably at the cutting edge of European research on microelectronics, microtechnologies and nanotechnologies. In 2003, it took out 292 patents, a performance which places it as the leading public research organization in France. In France the law firm representing CEA is MIZRAHI Associés in Paris. | |||||||||||||||||||||
