New Principal Of Engineering Announced At Imperial College LondonJune 30, 2004Imperial College London today announces the appointment of Dr Julia King as its new Principal of the Faculty of Engineering. Dr Julia King CBE FREng joins Imperial from the Institute of Physics, where she has been Chief Executive since September 2002. She is expected to join Imperial later this year. Sir Richard Sykes, Rector of Imperial College London, said: "We are very pleased to have attracted someone of Julia's high calibre. Engineering is a key part of Imperial, and Julia's experience and enthusiasm are crucial to build on Imperial's world class reputation, and take it forward." Imperial's Faculty of Engineering is the largest in the UK, with the largest number of academic staff rated 5* -- indicating research quality is rated as internationally excellent -- in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. It comprises ten departments, with over 1,000 staff, 3,800 students and a turnover of around £60 million. It is one of four Faculties within the College. Dr King, 49, becomes the second Principal of Engineering at Imperial, taking over from Acting Principal Professor Frank Leppington. Her career has included time spent in both academia and industry. Before joining the Institute of Physics, Dr King held a number of senior positions at Rolls-Royce plc and prior to that spent 16 years as an academic researcher and lecturer. Her research interests include the mechanisms of metal fatigue and fracture, and aerospace and marine propulsion. She is currently chairman of the Defence Science Advisory Council of the Ministry of Defence, and has been a member of the Council of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and served on the Foresight Panels for Materials, Marine and Defence and Aerospace. Dr King was made CBE in the 1999 Birthday Honours list, for services to materials engineering. She is married, and lists among her recreations people, growing orchids, collecting modern prints, gardening and walking. | |||||||||||||||||||||
