Politicians Must Listen To The Scientists Or We Face DiasasterJune 28, 2004The University of Surrey's School of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences held their 'Festival of Research' to celebrate the world class research success of the School, and to facilitate new collaborations on June 18. Amongst the speakers for the event was the renowned world authority on food safety, Professor Hugh Pennington, Professor of Bacteriology, University of Aberdeen. He delivered a speech entitled: 'Scientists, Politicians and the Media!' "Scientists and Politicians must learn from past biological disasters, otherwise they will occur again. The BSE crisis; E-Coli outbreaks and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) evolve in real time, but we only react to them in part. It seems that more attention could be given to those killer diseases not highlighted in the media. For instance, Campylobacter affects 400,000 vulnerable people every year - whereas under 2,000 are affected by E-Coli 0157 strand. We are not good at learning from history. Policy is drawn up as a knee-jerk reaction but Politicians must listen to the Scientists, the facts are all there. I'm more worried about the nasty bird flus we've seen in the East, than I am about bio-terrorism. If they find a way of transmitting from human to humans then we will have a world disaster on our hands" Keynote address: Professor Russell Foster, Department of Integrative and Molecular Neuroscience, Imperial College School of Medicine, London. "Novel light sensing mechanisms within the eye" Dr Fiona Green (SBMS), "Simple approaches in a complex disease: Hot topic in Neuroscience: Professor Ian Kitchen (SBMS)"Dopamine release from deep brain structures in gene knockout mice: the A2A adenosine receptor and addiction" Hot topic in Infection and Immunity: Dr Simon Park (SBMS) "New functions for the ancient globin family: Nitric oxide detoxification and sensing in the foodborne pathogen Campylobacter jejuni" Hot topic in Drug Design, Development and Safety: Dr Nick Plant (SBMS) Hot topic in Diagnostics and Materials: Festival Conclusion and Prizes: For further information contact: Rebecca Weale, Press Office at the University of Surrey, Tel: 01483 689314 or E-mail: media@surrey.ac.uk | |||||||||||||||||||||
