Swedish Building Research Maintains High QualityJune 23, 2004Swedish building research is highly focused on sustainable development and covers most aspects of relevance to both the social economy and society as a whole. The academic quality is decidedly good overall and excellent in certain areas from an international perspective. This has been established in an international assessment. An international panel of experts has assessed the building research funded by Formas (Swedish Research council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning)(and the former Building Research Council) and conducted by "Much of the research we have looked at is of fine quality," says the chair of the panel of experts, Professor Tuija Vihavainen, assistant CEO of the Building and Transportation Unit, VTT, in Finland. "But Swedish research findings are not sufficiently well known abroad, neither in the academic community nor in the building industry." A strong recommendation from the experts to Swedish building researchers is that they should step up their international publishing and devote more time to establishing networks. "Many research teams are also small and therefore vulnerable," continues Vihavainen. "The departments should consider sharpening their research profiles and creating larger and thereby more viable entities in certain key National and international alliances and collaboration among the players in the building sector are key concepts in the recommendations to the researchers, their departments, and Formas. | |||||||||||||||||||||
