Media Invitation: Urban environment in the context of EU enlargement: European research helps cities to solve common problems

June 22, 2004

WHAT?
80% of Europeans are living in cities, confronted to major environmental and social challenges in a daily basis. European Commission is organising a Conference on "Sustainable urban management and Land Use" to assess the results of this area of research so far, to transfer best practices through concrete case studies and remedies and to explore future needs and opportunities for the new Member States

WHO?
Experts and policy makers specialised on urban, regional and land use issues from across Europe.

WHEN?
1 July 2004 and 2 July 2004

WHERE?
The Senate of the Czech Republic Parliament - Prague

On 1 and 2 July, the European Commission, with the support of the Senate of the Czech Republic and the Municipality of Prague, is organising a conference to review "hot" urban and land use issues, such as the assessment of impacts of indoor and outdoor air pollutants in urban areas, including their effects on health and cultural heritage, the revitalisation of contaminated sites, the refurbishment of housing, etc.
Leading experts will also be on-hand to explain how various international teams are putting into practice Europe's drive to insure sustainable cities from an economic, social and cultural point of view.

What's on offer?

Looking at sustainable urban and regional environment from different angles: A selection of EC research project addressing this issue will be presented in the Conference (see: http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/info/conference_en.html).
As an example:

DEMOS project is addressing the need for innovation and sustainability in a European society suffering increasingly from democratic deficit, citizens dissatisfaction and policy fragmentation. Project leader: Sarah Thiam (UK)
www.demosproject.org

PROPOLIS project is developing and testing integrated land use and transport policies, defining future urban strategies, and demonstrating their effects on European cities Project leader: Kari Lautso (FI)

SUIT project aims at establishing a flexible and consistent Environmental Assessment methodology to assist with the conservation of urban fragments heritage. The results will be used by municipalities and local authorities to help them to assess the sustainability of new urban developments. Project leader: Albert Dupagne (BE)

NORISC project aims at the revitalisation of contaminated sites in urban areas. It is providing guidelines for efficient risk assessment, minimizing time and cost for investigation, redevelopment and remediation. Project leader: Barbara Moehlendick (DE)

MULTI-ASSESS project addresses urban air pollution toxics components, modelling a novel "dose response" function to combat corrosion and soiling of materials. It proposes a "threshold level" of pollutants in the air, as proposed by the Convention on Long Distance & Cross-frontier Atmospheric Pollution adopted by the UNECE, and the EC Directives for Air quality. Project leader: Vladimir Kucera (SE)

Journalists will have the possibility to attend the Conference sessions and meeting the representatives of all the EU projects to be presented, as well as representatives from local & regional authorities and urban researchers from more than twenty different countries. The programme also includes an on-site technical visit to Prague.
