Electronic HandbrakeJune 16, 2004The adjudication panel of the IV Accenture Prize for the Best Graduate Thesis at the Bilbao School of Technical Engineering has been awarded to Grzegorz Breczewski, a 24-year-old graduate student who has developed a project known as "electronic brake for stationary mode" and which is a novel system of electronic hand braking for the automobile. The mechanism is notable for its simplicity and low cost and the young researcher is currently awaiting the granting of the corresponding patent. This new system substitutes the traditional brake handle by a "mecatronic" device, i.e. by an electronic mechanism for electronic control activated by a simple button. Apart from affording comfort to the interior of the vehicle, this electronic hand brake increases the safety of the automobile, as it can inter-react with an ABS braking system in case of emergency. The great innovation of the award project lies in its exclusive system of a metal casing with a series of slots, which means it is a simple-to-use mechanism and less costly than current systems, while at the same time complying with all the dynamic specifications required for any essential automobile component. Likewise, the system complies with all the rigorous European norms regarding the automotive sector, enabling progressive braking in case of emergency, as well as a mechanical release system in case of failure in the electronic system of the vehicle. The project was developed in seven months for the Batz automotive parts company, where the award-winning student carried out his final graduate year work-study. | |||||||||||||||||||||
