TU Delft and Shell join forcesJune 15, 2004On Monday 14 June, TU Delft and Shell signed a declaration of intent for closer cooperation. "It is a strategic partnership," says Chairman of the TU Delft Executive Board, Ir. G.J. van Luijk. Both organisations want to help create the stronger knowledge exchange that our society needs. Ir. R. Willems, President-Director of Shell Netherlands, signed the contract on behalf of Shell. The strategic framework is a structural cooperation on four fronts: upstream (finding and mining of oil and gas), downstream (e.g. refining and chemistry), renewables (e.g. solar power and wind power) and scouting for and coaching talent and training. This includes cooperative research, knowledge exchange and education. By making use of each other's knowledge and experience, an intensified development can take place in these fields. Van Luijk: "When it comes to the education of talent, TU Delft is a very important partner. We want to challenge students to think about complex problems with a strong social relevance. In cooperation with Shell, we can challenge these students and provide them with opportunities for the future at the same time." Along with students, both partners want to exchange personnel and share facilities. This adds to a mutual improvement of education and research. Willems: "In this way, TU Delft has easier access to our various areas of expertise and Shell has a new external antenna for the latest developments in science and technology." The cooperation between TU Delft and Shell is not exclusive. This means that both parties can enter into similar cooperation agreements with other companies or universities. Van Luijk: "This fits perfectly into the 'Sectorplan Wetenschap en Technologie,' in which arrangements were made for a stronger cooperation between universities and trade and industry." In a knowledge-intensive society such as the Netherlands wants to be, connections between universities and companies like Shell are indispensable. Van Luijk: "New ideas form in such strategic frameworks, and a university of technology gets to do what it is good at: developing theories and putting them into practice." | |||||||||||||||||||||
