New Proteome Research Centre Opens in DublinJune 01, 2004The official launch of the Conway Institute Proteome Research Centre will take place on June 3rd and 4th 2004. The opening symposium to mark the occasion has attracted scientific luminaries from the world of protein research. The new challenge in biomedical science since the completion of the human genome has been to discover the function of proteins encoded by genes. This new facility will have the most diverse mixture of instrumentation and software available anywhere in Ireland for the study of proteins. The major focus of the proteomic research programme will be to identify new biological markers of disease and possible targets for therapy. The investment by the Irish Government in post-genomic research facilitated the development of the Proteome Research Centre, situated on the Belfield campus of University College Dublin. Professor Stephen Pennington, who will lead the facility says, "We are excited by the potential of the state-of -the-art instrumentation we have installed in the Proteome Research Centre and look forward to the challenge of applying it to a diverse range of biomedical research projects to further our understanding of biological systems and human diseases ". Delegates to the two-day conference will hear presentations from renowned speakers including Prof. Denis Hochstrasser, a pioneer of proteomics research and one of the founders of the Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics, Dr. Scott Patterson, Director, Medical Sciences at Amgen Inc and former Vice President of Proteomics at the Celera Genomics Group. | |||||||||||||||||||||
