Joop Hermens awarded SETAC Europe Environmental Education AwardMay 17, 2004Dr. Joop Hermens was awarded the 2004 Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe Environmental Education Award, sponsored by Dr. U. Noack Laboratorien. Though the award was intended to honor Hermens, he saw it as an acknowledgement of the effort from the environmental toxicology and chemistry research group at the Institute for Risk Assessment (IRAS) at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. "I consider it as an appreciation of the work from our group in Utrecht during the last 15 years," Hermens said of the award during his acceptance speech at the opening session of the SETAC Europe 14th Annual Meeting held recently in Prague, Czech Republic. This award is presented annually by SETAC Europe to a scientist or organization to honor activities in the dissemination of knowledge of the environmental sciences. Hermens received the award because of his outstanding record of interdisciplinary activities and substantial contributions to the environmental sciences. Hermens earned a doctorate in toxicology from the University of Utrecht's Department of Veterinary Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Toxicology in 1983. He has served as an associate professor and head of the environmental toxicology and chemistry section of the IRAS at the University of Utrecht since 1990. During the course of his career, he has published nearly 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored three books. Hermens has also served as direct supervisor of nearly 20 doctorate candidates since 1988. He says that he believes he received the Environmental Education Award mainly for his contributions to the education and training of doctorate candidates in the fields of environmental toxicology and chemistry. | |||||||||||||||||||||
