Teen smokers influenced by movie star smokers
Teen smokers are influenced to take up the habit if their favourite movie stars are smokers, suggests research in Tobacco Control. Teenagers, aged 10 to 19, were surveyed about their smoking habits and their attitudes to smoking. These were scored on a five point scale. The teens were also asked to name their favourite movie star. Altogether, 632 students from five rural New England schools took... View News Article (2001-02-23)

Oldest stars found near Milky Way center
Astronomers have discovered the oldest known stars, dating from before the Milky Way Galaxy formed, when the Universe was just 300 million years old.  View News Article (2015-11-12)

Star on a Hubble diet
How heavy can a star be? This conundrum has haunted astronomers for decades. Theory indicates that there should be an upper stellar mass limit somewhere between 120 and 300 solar masses. Even though heavy stars are very bright, measurements of their masses can be complicated. View News Article (2006-12-12)

Newly Born Twin Stars Are Far From Identical
Two stars, each with the same mass and in orbit around each other, are twins that one would expect to be identical. So astronomers were surprised when they discovered that twin stars in the Orion Nebula, a well-known stellar nursery 1,500 light years away, were not identical at all. View News Article (2008-06-19)

Light from the darkness
On the left of this new image there is a dark column resembling a cloud of smoke. To the right shines a small group of brilliant stars. View News Article (2013-01-16)

A young star's age can be gleamed from nothing but sound waves
Determining the age of stars has long been a challenge for astronomers. In experiments published in the journal Science, researchers at KU Leuven's Institute for Astronomy show that 'infant' stars can be distinguished from 'adolescent' stars by measuring the acoustic waves they emit. View News Article (2014-07-07)

Baby stars born to 'napping' parents
Cardiff University astronomers believe that a young star's long "napping" could trigger the formation of a second generation of smaller stars and planets orbiting around it. View News Article (2011-03-10)

Mystery of Quintuplet stars in Milky Way solved
For the first time, scientists have identified the cluster of Quintuplet stars in the Milky Way's galactic center, next to the super massive black hole, as massive binary stars nearing the end of their life cycle, solving a mystery that had dogged astronomers for more than 15 years. View News Article (2006-08-21)

Ultrafast star escapes black hole
Galactic nuclei are the cores of galaxies, groups of thousands to millions of stars that are held together by gravity. As stars in the nucleus are so close together, interactions readily occur. View News Article (2006-10-05)

Red explosions: The secret life of binary stars is revealed
A University of Alberta professor has revealed the workings of a celestial event involving binary stars that results in an explosion so powerful it ranks close to Supernovae in luminosity.  View News Article (2013-01-25)
