Liver Biology: Fundamental Mechanisms and Translational Applications

Bethesda, MD - The conference will cover all aspects of hepatocyte, cholangiocyte, hepatic stellate cell, sinusoidal endothelial cell and immune cell function in the healthy and diseased liver, their crosstalk and role in maintaining liver function and metabolism in normal and disease states, as well as mechanisms that regulate the identity and fate during development and adulthood.

With recent advances in the cure of hepatitis C hepatitis and the continuing obesity epidemic, the landscape of liver disease is changing. For this reason, one area the 2016 Liver Biology conference will focus on is metabolism and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This topic will receive broad coverage with a wide range of experts discussing basic mechanisms of hepatic metabolism, pathways regulating the progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis as well as the gut-liver axis. Additional focus of the conference will be on other key areas that require better understanding of the underlying biology in order to develop efficient therapeutic approaches. Foremost, this will include hepatocellular carcinoma, which remains a leading cause of death in patients with advanced liver disease. Tumor biology, signaling pathways and novel targets as well as the hepatic tumor microenvironment will be discussed in specific sessions. Although a number of underlying liver diseases can be cured, fibrosis can persist and cause severe clinical complications. Understanding mechanisms of fibrogenesis and targets will provide the basis for future treatments and be an integral part of the conference. Likewise, alcoholic liver disease remains a significant global problem and recent advances on mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver disease will be covered by leading experts in the field. Finally, the concept of the liver stem cell continues to receive heightened attention due to its potential relevance for therapeutic applications. The conference will present recent developments on the role of hepatocytes versus dedicated stem cells in regeneration of the liver.

A key focus of this conference is to encourage scientific exchange and discussions between attendees with dedicated time slots for discussions and several "meet-the-expert" workshops. The conference seeks to promote the participation of students, post-doctoral fellows and junior investigators. Short talks and travel awards will be provided to them if they are the designated presenter of the top 10-20% of submitted abstracts. Finally, daily poster sessions and social activities will allow plenty of opportunities for exchange of ideas and establishing collaboration amongst participants. This FASEB Liver Biology conference promises to be the best international basic liver meeting of its kind.
