FASEB releases FY 2012 funding recommendations for science agencies

Bethesda, MD - The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has released its annual report to Congress, Federal Funding for Biomedical & Related Life Sciences Research, FY 2012. "Sustained and predictable support for research is critical to improving human health and driving future innovation. Public opinion still strongly favors investing in science even given the fiscal constraints facing the country," said William T. Talman, MD, FASEB President. "We need to maintain our investment in research. Cutting back on that investment would harm individuals in every Congressional district across the country by delaying cures, missing opportunities to improve health outcomes for our citizens, and slowing down the discovery of new treatments for costly illnesses. FASEB will be conveying the need to fund the full spectrum of research, from basic to translational to clinical, as well to support science across a broad array of disciplines." Below are the recommendations for the five agencies described in the report.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
FASEB urges Congress to make investment in the National Institutes of Health a priority and requests that NIH receive $35 billion in FY 2012.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
FASEB recommends an appropriation of $7.8 billion for the National Science Foundation in FY 2012.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
FASEB recommends funding the VA Medical and Prosthetics Research Program at $621 million in FY 2012.

Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science
In keeping with President Obama's Plan for Science, FASEB recommends an appropriation of $5.1 billion for the Department of Energy Office of Science in FY 2012.

Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agriculture and Food Research Initiative
FASEB supports funding the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) at $500 million in FY 2012.

The report outlines FASEB's research funding goals for the next fiscal year and will be sent to members of Congress and senior officials in the Obama administration. A copy of the report is also available online.
