Biomedical showcase March 4 in Bethesda

A Biomedical Engineering and Science Research Showcase on March 4 at the Bethesda Marriott, sponsored by the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Science, will offer sessions ranging from biomechanics to drug discovery presented by scientists from 11 institutions and agencies.

This showcase offers the opportunity for researchers, program directors, and corporate representatives to identify and review today's critical biomedical engineering and science research topics and to establish collaborations to address those topics.

Keynote speakers are Sid Smith, a former president and chief science officer of the American Heart Association; currently director of the Center for Cardiovascular Science and Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Richard Swaja, senior advisor for biomedical engineering in the National Institutes of Health's Office of Extramural Research.

Session panels will include researchers from the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Science, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Georgetown University, North Carolina State University, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Children's National Medical Center, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Army Research Office, U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory, and Merck.

There will be sessions on Nanotechnology, Materials and Tissue Engineering, Bioinformatics, Imaging, Biomechanics, Systems Biology, Drug Discovery, and Animal Models of Infectious Diseases.
