Add Multiples of 100

Do you remember **multiples of 10**?Β

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90

That's it!

**Multiples of 10 **end with **one 0.**

π€ What do you think **multiples of 100 **end with?

π They in end with **two zeros.**Β

100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900

Now, let's look at how to add these numbers!

Let's try this problem!

100 + 300 = ?

Both numbers have 2 zeros at the end. They're both **multiples of 100.**

Let's add them the usual way first.

We write them in **column form**.

**π First,** we add the **Ones.**Β

We get a zero!

**Next,** we add the **Tens.**

We still get zero!

**Finally,** add the **Hundreds.**Β

What is 1 + 3?

Correct! It's 4.Β

We'll write 4 in the Hundreds place.

So, 100 + 300 = **400**.

π Here's the **secret trick:**

When **adding multiples of 100**, you can **ignore the zeros **in the Tens and Ones.

π Just add the digits in the Hundreds place.

Then, just **write two zeros **after the answer you get.

In our example, you write 4, then add two zeros after it.

You got it!

Let's add these numbers:

345 + 200 = ?

Let's add the usual way before we learn the secret trick. π

Let's write the numbers in **column form**.

**π First,** we add the **Ones.**

What is 5 + 0? It's 5!

**Next,** we add the **Tens.**

4 + 0 is 4!

**Finally,** we add the **Hundreds.**

We add 3 + 2. That gives us 5.

Our answer is **545**.

π Ready for the secret trick?

π Go straight to adding the Hundreds.

Then, just copy the Tens and Ones from the first addend.

So 3 + 2 is 5. Then, write 4 and 5 after it.Β

That gives us 545!Β

That's the same answer we got when we did it the longer way. π

Great job! Now, it's time to try the practice exercises! π€
