Faculty of 1000 Biology launch ecology facultyMarch 17, 2005
Faculty of 1000 Biology (www.facultyof1000.com/), a revolutionary literature awareness service for the life sciences, today announce the launch of a new faculty - ecology. The ecology faculty expands the coverage of Faculty of 1000 Biology, adding to the existing offering of 15 faculties covering subject areas from biochemistry to structural biology.
Harold Mooney, Professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University is one of three Heads of Faculty for ecology. He warmly welcomes the expansion of the service to include ecological research:
"Faculty of 1000 Biology is a really wonderful tool to keep up with the major advances in one's discipline, guided by experts in the field. This is the answer to keeping up with the escalating abundance of new scientific information and offers an extraordinary insight into those publications that have the potential to impact significantly the development of ecology."
Ilkka Hanski and Jane Lubchenco join Professor Mooney as Heads of Faculty for ecology. Ilkka Hanski is Professor, Department of Ecology and Systematics at the University of Helsinki in Finland, while Jane Lubchenco is Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University. These respected leaders in the field have helped recruit over 150 experts to act as Section Heads and Faculty Members for the ecology faculty. A full list of the researchers involved in the faculty is available on the Faculty of 1000 Biology website at http://www.facultyof1000.com/about/members/8032
The new faculty includes 11 sections: Behavioural ecology; Community ecology & biodiversity; Conservation & restoration ecology; Ecosystem ecology; Evolutionary ecology; Global change ecology; Marine & freshwater ecology; Physiological ecology; Population ecology; Spatial & landscape ecology; Theoretical ecology.
The Faculty of 1000 Biology ecology faculty not only evaluates articles in ecology journals, but also provides evaluations on relevant articles published in general science journals, and in journals aimed at other specialties. Ecologists and conservation biologists will be able to quickly and easily identify important articles of relevance to them in a range of journals, and read evaluations of the articles by experts in the field.
Faculty of 1000 Biology is a unique online service that systematically highlights the most interesting papers published in the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of over 1900 of the world's leading scientists. The end-product is a rapid service, run by scientists, that provides a consensus view of important papers and trends across biology. Users can customize the service to their interests and opt for regular updates by email. Over 80% of the world's top institutions already subscribe.

The ultimate guide to understanding biology
Have you ever wondered how the food you eat becomes the energy your body needs to keep going? The theory of evolution says that humans and chimps descended from a common ancestor, but does it tell us how and why? We humans are insatiably curious creatures who can't help wondering how things work—starting with our own bodies. Wouldn't it be great to have a single source of quick answers to all our questions about how living things work? Now there is.
Mariëlle Hoefnagels' passion as a classroom instructor is evident in Biology: Concepts and Investigations, an introductory biology textbook written to explain the general concepts of biology at a level of detail that allows students to understand concepts rather than memorize details. New media integration icons, upgraded PowerPoint presentations, new tutorial animations based on textbook art, upgraded Connect question banks, and adaptive technologies like LearnSmart and SmartBook capitalize on the power of technology to enhance student understanding.
