Mt. Baker, new geologic fault and more on geoscience agenda next week in Bellingham

Boulder, Colorado, USA - Approximately 600 geoscientists will gather 4-6 May for the 103rd annual meetings of the Cordilleran Section of the Geological Society of America. The meeting takes place at and is hosted by Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

Journalists are invited to attend sessions of interest, interview scientists, and visit the exhibit area. Information on complimentary media registration and procedures for arranging onsite and telephone interviews during the meeting are provided below.


Engineering Geologic Challenges in the Pacific Northwest and Cordillera (Posters)
Saturday, 5 May, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Wade King Center, Room 127

This session highlights many geological hazards in the region. A presentation by Recep Cakir of the Washington Department of Natural Resources focuses on a new model for seismic hazards planning in Washington State.

Pacific Northwest Paleoseismology and Neotectonics
Saturday, 5 May, 1:30-5:00 p.m., WWU Communications Facility, Room 120

Talks highlight new studies on active or recently active faults in the area. Presentations by Ralph Haugerud of the US Geological Survey and Elizabeth Barnett of Humboldt State University include information on a newly-discovered fault located near Bellingham.

Holocene Volcanic and Glacial Geology at Mount Baker, Washington: Reports from On-Going Field Studies

This session includes a variety of studies on the volcano near Bellingham. Talks address changes in the magma body beneath Mount Baker (Brendan Hodge, Kristin Hill, Western Washington University), recent eruptive history (David Tucker, Western Washington University), and landslide hazards (David Lewis, Mount Baker High School science department).

MEDIA REGISTRATION AND PROCEDURES Eligibility for media registration is as follows: Journalists and PIOs must pay for any short courses or field trips in which they wish to participate. Representatives of the business side of news media, publishing houses, and for-profit corporations must register at the main registration desk and pay the appropriate fees. Complimentary meeting registration covers attendance at all technical sessions and access to the exhibit hall. Media must pay regular fees for paid luncheons, field trips, etc.

Media representatives may register onsite at in the exhibits and poster hall, Wade King Center, Room 127. Registration will be open Thursday, 3 May, 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 4-5 May, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 6 May, 7:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. All media registrants will receive a name badge and the program/abstract book upon arrival. Journalists who wish to pre-register may contact Ann Cairns, GSA Director of Communications, at 303-357-1056 or for assistance.

Media registrants may arrange on-site interviews after attending the session in which the talk is given or by leaving a note at the GSA Registration Desk requesting an interview before or after the talk.
