Dr. Marahelli G. Prasad of Stevens receives ASME award

Dr. Marahelli G. Prasad, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Noise and Vibration Control Laboratory at Stevens Institute of Technology, received the 2011 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Section Advisor Award for District A for his dedicated service as an advisor. District A spans 13 eastern states, as well as District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The award is the latest recognition of Dr. Prasad's dedication to ensuring student achievement. As advisor of the Stevens student sections of ASME and Engineers Without Borders, Dr. Prasad has a positive influence on students both in and outside of the classroom. In 2010, he was honored with the Bharat Gaurav (Pride of India) Award by the India International Friendship Society for his work in engineering and education. He is also a fellow of the ASME, Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and Acoustical Society of India (ASI).

"This well-deserved award honors Dr. Prasad's dedication to student success and his continued contributions to mechanical engineering at Stevens," says Dr. Keith Sheppard, Associate Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science. "Dr. Prasad inspires students to become leaders through their involvement in campus-wide activities, attendance at district level professional development conferences and continued involvement in ASME following graduation."

Under Dr. Prasad's guidance, students have won many ASME awards over the years, including first and second place finishes in the ASME Old Guard Technical Poster, Web Page, and Oral competitions. His success with ASME at Stevens is fitting, as the histories of the Institute and the Society have been intertwined since the first ASME meeting was held at Stevens in 1880.

"His personal accomplishments in Mechanical Engineering are frequently tied to the positive impact he has on students who work with him," says Dr. Constantin Chassapis, Deputy Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science and Department Director of Mechanical Engineering. "His passion for noise and vibration control is rivaled only by his dedication to teaching and advising students."

Dr. Prasad was also recently named a guest editor for a special issue of the journal Advances in Acoustics and Vibration. The issue, titled "Noise Abatement for Industrial Machinery," will present research on reducing noise levels for psychological and physiological comfort.
