Abner Shimony Conference only 4 weeks away

From July 18-21, 2006, a remarkable event will be held at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to mark the achievements of renowned physicist and philosopher Abner Shimony.

The conference, "Quantum Reality, Relativistic Causality, and Closing the Epistemic Circle", brings together leading physicists and philosophers to honour all aspects of Shimony's diverse accomplishments. Talks and discussions will cover a wide range of subjects within physics and philosophy, including theoretical and experimental aspects of quantum entanglement and non-locality, relativistic causality, quantum measurement problem, probability theory and scientific realism.

Invited speakers include Alain Aspect (CNRS, Orsay, France), Nobel Prize winner Sir Anthony Leggett (Illinois), Lee Smolin (Perimeter Institute) and Anton Zeilinger (Vienna).

Abner Shimony, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Physics at Boston University and winner of the 1996 Lakatos Award in Philosophy of Science, is widely respected by both physicists and philosophers. Among many accomplishments in his distinguished career, he is best known for his contribution to the famous Bell-CHSH inequality which helped trigger the development of Quantum Information Theory. Shimony holds two PhDs, the first in Philosophy from Yale University (1953) and the second in Physics from Princeton University (1962), where he was a student of Eugene Paul Wigner, a Nobel Prize winner in 1963.

Local conference organizers are Joy Christian (Perimeter Institute and Oxford University) and Wayne Myrvold (University of Western Ontario). The conference is sponsored and organized by Perimeter Institute and additional sponsorship has been provided by the Institute for Quantum Computing.
