Advanced energy systems and propulsion technology

June 22, 2010 - Reston, Va. - The role of energy policy in promoting increased use of alternative energy, fuel cells, space-based solar power systems, and the "greening" of propulsion technology will be among the topics discussed at the Nashville Convention Center, Nashville, Tenn., on July 25󈞈 at the 8th International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (IECEC) and the 46th Joint Propulsion Conference (JPC). IECEC is organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and JPC is jointly organized by AIAA and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, SAE International, and the American Society of Engineering Education.

The 8th IECEC will present a mix of key note addresses, panel discussions, and technical sessions exploring the future of advanced energy systems. Subjects to be discussed include: fuel cells, electric hybrid vehicles, space-based solar power systems, technologies for developing sustainable buildings, trends in advanced power systems research and development, and evolving standards for space lithium and ion batteries, as well as the current state of U.S. energy policy and the changes necessary in that policy to promote more efficient, advanced energy systems.

The 46th JPC will present a mix of keynote addresses, panel discussions, and technical sessions examining the continued greening of propulsion systems, and how greener propulsion systems play a key role in environmental protection. Highlights of the conference include a panel on the future of human spaceflight propulsion, a panel on how advances in green propulsion technology are often mitigated by other considerations in flight programs, the role of alternative fuels in green propulsion technology, and a consideration of the place for propulsion systems within aerospace education.

The conferences will also share several sessions, including a panel discussion on the future of space launch and space system propulsion, and a panel discussion on the progress, challenges, and new directions for alternative fuel use in propulsion systems.

AIAA will also hold two "Engineers as Educators" workshops during the conferences, on July 27 and 28. The purpose of these workshops is to give aerospace professional the skills necessary to present age and grade-level appropriate programs on engineering and other science, technology, and math subjects to primary and secondary school students and community groups.

The 8th IECEC is sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The 46th JPC is sponsored by Dynetics, GE, Jacobs Engineering, Lockheed Martin, the Aerospace Testing Alliance; and NASA.
