Impact Factor names Cell top research journal

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., USA (June 23, 2009) - For the second year in a row, Cell is ranked cell biology's top research journal, according to new data released in the 2008 Journal Citation Reports© published by ThomsonReuters.

In the report released June 19, Cell's impact factor increased to 31.3 from 29.2 the previous year. Cell is the flagship journal of Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier.

"Once again Cell Press thanks its authors and reviewers for their contributions to the cell biology literature. We are privileged to publish them," said Lynne Herndon, President and CEO of Cell Press.

The ThomsonReuters ranking also reveals that the inaugural impact factor for Cell Stem Cell scored at 16.83 - only two years after the journal's launch in 2007.

The 2008 Journal Citation Reports© show that seven other Cell Press titles increased their impact factor in the past year: Cancer Cell (+4.627%), Current Biology (+2.258%), Immunity (+6.815%), Neuron (+5.667%), Structure (+3.173%), Biophysical Journal (+1.210%), and Developmental Cell (+3.586%).

The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor helps to evaluate a journal's relative importance, especially when compared with others in the same field.
