SIAM Student Paper Prize winners present solution papers at SIAM Annual Meeting

Each year, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) awards SIAM Student Paper Prizes to the most outstanding papers submitted to the SIAM Student Paper Prize Competition.

SIAM is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 SIAM Student Paper Prizes:

Jeremy Brandman
University of California, Los Angeles
"A Level-Set Method for Computing the Eigenvalues of Elliptic Operators Defined on Compact Hypersurfaces"

Roland Griesmaier
Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz
"An Asymptotic Factorization Method for Inverse Electromagnetic Scattering in Layered Media"

David Ketcheson
University of Washington
"Highly Efficient Strong Stability Preserving Runge-Kutta Methods with Low-Storage Implementations"

All three papers are singly authored and have been published in peer-reviewed research journals.

The winners presented their papers during the 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, receiving funds toward travel expenses and gratis registration. The recipients each also received a framed certificate and a monetary award at the meeting. The 2007 recipients of the SIAM Student Paper Prizes were also recognized at and had the opportunity to present their papers during the 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting.

The award is based solely on the merit and content of the students' contribution to the submitted paper and recognizes outstanding scholarship by students in applied mathematics and scientific computing who do not yet hold their PhD at the application date. Papers entered in the competition must have already been submitted for publication. Members of the selection committee were Peter Kuchment, Texas A&M University; Maeve McCarthy, Murray State University; Michael Shearer, North Carolina State University; and William L. Briggs, University of Colorado at Denver and SIAM Vice President for Education, who served as Chair of the committee.
