Huawei and Beijing Genomics Institute agreed to boost gene technology efficiency over 30 percent

Shanghai-Huawei Cloud Congress (HCC) held on 18th to 19th September 2015, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) signed the partnership agreement to establishing 'Big Data Genome Storage System'.

Huawei and BGI will place emphasis in gene technology workflow, co-design and to innovate customized large data storage system for research work in genomics. BGI's CEO Dr. Yang Shuang and vice-president Fang Lin, Huawei's IT product line president Zheng Ye-Lai and general manager of mass storage field Xiao-Yi, attended the signing ceremony at HCC.

'BGI has always aim to improve analytical work in the field of genomics and to provide better service to the population. Efficiency of genomic analysis has a fundamental impact on the technical output. Gene technology is a classic framework for the application of big data, from the knowledge of biological samples' diagnostic tests for infectious diseases to familial diseases, and to the application of preventative diseases and clinical treatment; the aforementioned characteristics require the clearance of an enormous volume of data, and this process takes up a lot of time.'

BGI's CEO Dr Yang continued, 'Techniques commonly applied in Big Data and Cloud computing were the 'spin-offs' of analysts' intentions to accelerate their data analysis. Together with Huawei, we hope this cooperation and partnership will create innovative work related-to gene technology, and to elevate the efficiency to new heights.'

Huawei's IT product line president Zheng said, 'Gene technology is the fundamentals of Life Science research. Huawei is very happy to work with the world's leading genomic research institute, and with a major focus on big data, cloud computing and other aspects of informatics technologies to provide better services, as well as research in life sciences. Together (with BGI), we strive to push forward gene technology to benefit the society.' The Huawei-BGI new partnership is expected to improve efficiency in genomic research, increase output, reduce costings, and benefit members of the general public. Together with the expertise in big data and cloud computing, BGI is hence closer to reach their dreams and goals, 'Gene technology to create a better life for the human race'.
