Researchers at University College London discovered a new mechanism that allows the brain to monitor its own blood supply, potentially leading to new treatments for hypertension and dementia. Astrocytes, specialized brain cells, act as blood flow sensors to regulate brain blood flow and maintain oxygen supply.
