A study of nearly 8,800 individuals found that quitting heavy smoking lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease within five years, but this benefit diminishes after 10 to 15 years compared to never-smokers. The analysis suggests a long-term risk premium for former smokers, limiting the generalizability of findings
