The Medical Research Council has announced it will be funding 15 PhDs at the University of Warwick over the next three years.
The prestigious awards are granted by the Medical Research Council (MRC) following a highly competitive application process. Each year the MRC creates just a handful of training partnerships with UK universities.
The MRC issues the funding for doctoral training across its remit and strategic priority areas. The PhD studentships at Warwick will be in the areas of quantitative cellular dynamics, molecular microbiology and anti-microbial resistance.
Head of Biomedical Sciences at Warwick Medical School, Professor Jonathan Millar said: "We were delighted at this news. We were particularly thrilled that the panel described our proposal as outstanding and one that fully addressed or exceeded all the assessment criteria".
"Due to our broad leadership team, which includes mathematics and chemistry, we will be able to deliver an exceptionally strong interdisciplinary training programme that hopefully will produce the future leaders and innovators in biomedical and clinical research."
In recognition of the strategic need for skills provision in these research areas, the University of Warwick will partner the MRC by match funding the investment by the MRC to create a larger cohort of students.
In addition, the new doctoral training programme will offer students the opportunity to benefit from links with the A*Star graduate academy in Singapore and The MRC Unit in the Gambia.
