Drs. Prabhat Jha and Zhengming Chen discuss practicable interventions to address 4 sources of chronic disease in Asian countries. Eight million Asian residents, aged 30-69 die annually from chronic disease; many of these deaths are avoidable. There are a number of highly cost-effective interventions that could help control chronic disease, such as tobacco-smoking cessation programs aimed at the region’s 500 million smokers. An Asian partnership with Western governments and institutions aimed at mitigating the effects of chronic disease could have global benefits.
