The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 8 9 th in the world in the Shanghai World University Rankings 202 6 , published today.

Prof. Tamir Sheafer, President of the Hebrew University, stated:

"Being ranked 89th in the world is a significant recognition of the Hebrew University's academic excellence and international standing. As we enter our second century, we are building on a remarkable legacy while looking firmly to the future. Our researchers continue to produce outstanding scholarship, build international partnerships, and compete at the highest global level. This achievement belongs to our entire university community. Our task now is to continue strengthening the Hebrew University’s place among the world’s leading universities, drawing on the extraordinary depth and diversity of our academic community and investing in exceptional people, ambitious research, and global partnerships that advance discovery and extend the impact of our research around the world."

The 2026 ranking comes as the Hebrew University begins its second century. Since opening its doors in 1925, the University has remained true to its founding vision: advancing knowledge through research, scholarship, and international collaboration. Today, its researchers work across disciplines and borders, contributing to advances in science, medicine, technology, the humanities and social sciences. Its place among the world’s top 100 reflects both that century-long academic legacy and the strength of the research community shaping its next chapter.

The Shanghai Index, published annually, is considered one of the most reliable global rankings in academia. It evaluates the quality of research at institutions worldwide, taking into account factors such as the number of faculty members and alumni who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, as well as the volume and quality of publications in leading journals. This year’s ranking assessed approximately 2,500 universities. The Index is frequently cited by governments, funding agencies, and the international press, making it a key benchmark of global academic standing. With only a small fraction of the world’s universities making it into the top 100, Hebrew University’s inclusion underscores the exceptional quality and impact of its research.
