(Boston)--Anand K. Devaiah, MD, associate professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), was invited to give this year's John Conley, MD, Lecture on Medical Ethics at the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS) Annual Meeting. The prestigious award is based on Dr. Conley's passion for head and neck surgery and dedication to the highest standard of ethical behavior from physicians.
Devaiah also serves as Director of the Biomedical & Health Technology Development & Transfer Domain at the Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy (IHSIP) at BU and is an otolaryngologist at Boston Medical Center.
His experience in healthcare technology and innovation spans technology development, evaluation, implementation, research, administration, regulatory science, and intersections with social determinants of health. Devaiah's virtual lecture, "Shifting Action and Innovation Mindsets to Embrace Social Determinants of Health -- Ethical and Practical Considerations for All," addressed various social determinants of health, like education, economic stability, and physical environment.
"These have certainly been important prior to 2020, but we have faced unprecedented challenges on a national and global scale this year," he said. "This has brought especially sharp focus to the health of our nation and the global population, exposing how social determinants have an important role in health, and how health equity needs to figure more prominently in our actions."
Devaiah is the first Boston University faculty member to give this lecture. Past lecturers include heads of state, government leaders and prominent medical leaders.
