Researchers analyzed a multivariate data set of sea level dating back to 1982 and found that barystatic and steric contributions to the global mean sea level (GMSL) accounted for most interannual variability in satellite altimeter-measured GMSL; such variations were related to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and highlight the magnitude of steric and barystatic GMSL contributions associated with ENSO, according to the authors.
