Entomologist Mark Moffett observes harvester ants congregating with smaller cone ants in Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains. The unusual behavior involves the cone ants licking and nibbling the harvester ants' body surfaces, possibly consuming calorie-rich dust-size morsels.

A study found that ants can scare away pollinators like bees when defending plants with extrafloral nectaries, which are secretions that attract ants but not pollinators. However, plants with these glands on other locations had increased reproductive success.

• School of Science, The University of Tokyo · Sep 24, 2025 First-ever documented case of a plant mimicking ants to attract pollinators

A dogbane species has evolved to mimic the smell of injured ants to attract flies that feed on the ants and pollinate the flowers. The discovery reveals that floral mimicry is more diverse than previously imagined.

Researchers analyzed the Caldor Fire's impact on the Lake Tahoe Basin and found that pre-fire treatments significantly reduced fire severity. The most effective treatment types did not include controlled fires, highlighting the importance of other methods such as thinning and sweeping up unburned fuel piles.

Researchers have developed a new method for cleaning oil spills using massive fire whirls, which can burn through crude oil nearly twice as fast as in-situ fire pools. The results show that fire whirls produce 40% less soot and consume up to 95% of the fuel, leaving fewer harmful particles behind.

• Biochar Editorial Office, Shenyang Agricultural University · Jun 3, 2026 Moderate biochar use may help ants strengthen soil ecosystem functions, study finds

A new study found that rice straw biochar applied at moderate levels improved several colony behaviors linked to soil health in ants. Ants showed stronger habitat preference, built larger nests, and maintained more effective social recognition. However, high doses of biochar were detrimental, causing ant survival to drop sharply.
