BETHESDA, MD (July 28, 2026) — The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has announced that CEO Thomas J. Serena will retire effective Dec. 31, 2026, concluding a distinguished career that spans three decades of service to the organization and the gastroenterology community.
Over more than 30 years with AGA, Mr. Serena helped transform the organization from a respected professional society into a dynamic, forward-looking association recognized for its advocacy leadership, scientific excellence, governance innovation, and willingness to explore new opportunities that advance the field of gastroenterology.
“Tom’s impact on AGA is difficult to overstate,” said Byron Cryer, MD, AGAF, president of AGA. “His strategic vision, thoughtful leadership, and unwavering commitment to our mission have shaped the organization for generations of members. Under his leadership, AGA expanded our influence, strengthened our foundation, and embraced innovation in ways that will benefit the field for years to come. On behalf of our members and Governing Board, I thank Tom for his remarkable service and leadership.”
Mr. Serena’s tenure was marked by a commitment to financial stewardship, strategic growth, and a belief that AGA should not simply respond to change but help shape the future of digestive health.
“Tom has been a trusted partner to physician leaders across three decades," said past AGA president Lawrence Kim, MD, AGAF. "He possesses a rare ability to balance long-term strategy with day-to-day execution while always keeping AGA’s mission at the center of every decision. His leadership has helped position AGA as one of the most respected medical societies in health care."
While guiding the organization through sustained financial performance, Mr. Serena focused on investing in new programs, products, and growth opportunities. He led strategic efforts to strengthen governance, modernize AGA’s practice strategy, and position AGA as the home for innovation in gastroenterology.
“Serving AGA has been the honor of a lifetime,” Serena reflected. “I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary volunteer leaders, dedicated staff, and countless members who are advancing the field and improving patient care every day. I am especially grateful to my colleagues, whose talent and commitment made any success I have had possible. Together, we have built an organization that is financially strong, innovative, and well-positioned for the future. I am deeply grateful for the friendships, partnerships, and shared purpose that have defined my career.”
