Researchers report an assay for detecting HIV antibodies in oral fluid (OF), which is easier to collect than blood and potentially useful for population-based HIV screening efforts; the assay exhibited high sensitivity and specificity in detecting HIV antibodies in OF samples, and was up to 10,000 times more sensitive than clinical enzyme-linked immunoassays in detecting HIV antibodies in a buffer solution, suggesting a potential application of the assay in screening populations at risk of HIV.
