A study of 133 people exhibiting early psychosis symptoms finds that individuals exposed to childhood trauma displayed negative outcomes, such as decreased hippocampal volume, that are correlated with high blood oxidation status, whereas those who did not experience childhood trauma had no such correlation; the results suggest that the impacts of childhood trauma on the antioxidant defense system may lead to distinct symptom profiles and cognitive deficits in individuals who develop psychosis.
